First National Finance’s HQ in Harrow required a new Communication Room building at the companies
HQ in Harrow due to the business re-locating their staff and resources from the adjacent
building, which had previously housed there main communication room which provided their
entire site with data and voice communications.
A new communication room was built on the 3rd floor of the main building which required a
significant amount of cabling work to be carried out to maintain data and voice services.
|
|
|
Firstly 10 qty 800 x 800 42u communication cabinets were installed along with 6 Compaq server
cabinets and a PABX telephone distribution frame for voice communication distribution.
Due to organisations large scale needs, especially when it comes to its data and voice communications
the company required some resilience built into the new fibre & voice backbone cabling.
This was achieved by installing 3M 24-Core Volition 0M2 50/125um fibre optic cabling along with 100
pair 1308 voice cabling links from the new communication room to there remote communication cabinets over 6 floors.
Two 24-Core fibre optic cables and two 100 pair voice cables were installed and terminated within each remote
communication cabinet. Two separate routes were used to create diverse routing and resilience within the backbone links.
| |
 |
|
|
Termination of the 3M Volition fibre was undertaken using Volition V45 fibre connectors. These connectors
are terminated by polishing of two fibre cores simultaneously within one connector creating a duplex connection.
Testing of all fibre links was carried out using a Fluke Certifiber fibre optic tester which simultaneously tests
the new cable link at both 850/1300nm and provides a pass or fail result in compliance with 1000BASE-SX test
standard (gigabit Ethernet).
3M Volition Category 6 cabling was installed as interlinks between each of the 16 communication cabinet within
the new communication room along with installing Category 6 copper backbone links to each remote communication
cabinet to enable further resilience and ISDN connectivity etc to each remote cabinet.
|
|
|
The testing of the Category 6 cabling was carried out using a Fluke Omniscanner network cable tester and certified to
meet the test standards of ISO/IEE Class E link test. (250Mhz)
Voice backbone cabling was terminated onto a new wall mounted telephone frame within the communication room to provide
connectivity to the PABX telephone system, and terminated directly onto voice patch panels within the remote cabinets for
simple patching over the existing Cat 5e cabling.
Additional Cat 5e cabling was also installed to provide both data and voice communications to staff that had been re-located
over several weeks which involved working evenings and weekends to avoid any disruption to services.
The work carried out was successfully undertaken and met the strict time scale which was required to
meet the programme and final handover of the system.
