Project Focus
Queen Elizabeth High School was looking to install a managed wireless network system to provide eight of there Languages classrooms with wireless connectivity.

Previously unmanaged wireless access points had been attached to a laptop trolley and used to connect the pupil’s laptops to the schools network. Network connectivity was slow and un-reliable and a faster, secure & centrally controlled system was required.
A new 3Com WX2200 Wireless controller was installed within the schools main communication room along with 6no 3Com AP3950 managed access points, installed within the ceiling voids within the classrooms.

The wireless system is capable of providing wireless networking, wireless video & voice over WiFi in compliance with 802.11n Draft Standard.

New 4-Core OM3 Standard fibre optic cabling was installed & terminated within the schools main communication room and existing remote communication cabinet within the schools Language building.

The new WX2200 Wireless controller was connected over the LAN to a dedicated POE switch installed within the Language block communication cabinet. By installing a dedicated fibre optic link to the new POE switch, the only network traffic utilising this link is the wireless equipment.

Termination of the SC fibre optic connectors was carried out using a core alignment fusion splice used to terminate factory polished pigtail connectors onto the new cables ensuring minimum losses, and a far superior finish compared to other methods of termination.

An OTDR was used to test the losses by sending a trace along the entire length of the link which recorded each individual event and recorded the losses along the entire length of the cable.
We further tested each link using a Fluke Certification tester which will simply give a pass or fail when testing Fibre optic cabling to a standard which in this case was 1000BASE-SX. (1000mbps).

Further Category 5e cabling was installed from the Language block communication cabinets to the classrooms to provide a link to enable the 3Com AP3950 managed access points to connect with the wireless LAN.

Testing of the system was completed by testing the new Category 5e links to the Access Points using a Fluke Omniscanner to certify the cabling performance to ISO/IEE Class D link test which is capable of supporting Gigabit Ethernet.

The installation of the wireless network has been a big success and pupils are now able to experience secure wireless connection speeds in excess of 250Mbps with far greater reliability.
