Due to the ever increasing demand placed upon Passmores school to install a
dditional IT equipment and network cabling, a new larger communication cabinet
required installing within their main communication room.
Rutland ICT provide Passmores School with IT support and a decision was made
to install a new 39U floor standing communication cabinet to replace the existing
wall mounted cabinet. The new communication cabinet would house the schools
existing cabling and cater for there future needs.
Netlink Cabling & Security Solutions Ltd was chosen by Rutland ICT to undertake the work,
which we commenced by creating a new communication cabinet layout that was designed to
place connecting equipment in close proximity within the cabinet.

Additional cable management, rack mounted power supplies, internal shelving
and a 4-way internal fan were included within the proposed design, with space
being allocated for future cabling and equipment.
The cabinet change was carried out during the school holiday period, due to
there being in excess of 100 users who connect to the schools LAN through
this communication cabinet daily.
The next phase of the work involved undertaking an audit of the data, voice
and fibre optic cabling along with active equipment prior to its removal
from the existing cabinet.
Rutland ICT shut the network servers down and our work commenced by removing
fibre optic patch cords from active switches, fibre optic media converters
and routers etc followed by the disconnection of Cat 5e patch cables from
both data & voice patch panels

Following the removal of all the cabling and active equipment the existing
communication cabinet was removed from the wall and replaced by a new 39U
floor standing communication cabinet, which included a lockable front glass
door and ventilated side and rear doors.
The existing cabling and active equipment was then re-installed within the
new communication cabinet in accordance with the new cabinet layout. Fibre,
data and voice patch panels were re-located within the new cabinet.
During the removal of the network cabling from the existing cabinet a small
number of Category 5 cables had to be disconnected from the patch panels to
aid in there removal from the existing cabinet. These cables were re-terminated
and the links re-tested to industry standards.
Prior to re-connecting the active equipment a full inspection of the fibre patch
leads endface condition was carried out using a video probe to ensure there
suitability to re-connect the active equipment.

The fibre optic backbone links which were connecting remote cabinets around the
school were also re-tested and certified to meet 1000Base-SX test standards
using a Fluke certification tester prior to the link being re-connected to
the active equipment.
When the network and Internet connection had been re-established, we could
then commence the re-patching of both data & voice circuits using the information
gathered during our initial audit.
A continuity test was carried out on each patch cable prior to being re-connected;
this would ensure correct pin to pin connectivity on all four pairs prior to
re-connect both data & voice circuits.
Following the network servers going live, a final connectivity test was carried out
by our engineers by pinging the schools servers from all areas of the network that
had previously been connected through this communication room cabling.
Connectivity to all equipment including telephones, computers and printers etc was
succefully re-established leaving the client with a manageable cabling system with
the capacity for future growth.
